At M.M., environmental sustainability guides the company’s decisions and activities. Certified to ISO 14001 for its Environmental Management System, the company offers products with CSI (Recyclable Composites) and EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) certifications. In line with EU directives, it develops strategies for the prevention, repair and reuse of composites, with a commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its solutions.

M.M.’S COMMITMENT TO ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

At M.M., environmental sustainability is an integral part of the corporate vision. We work responsibly to understand and reduce the environmental impact of our products.
We are working to identify solutions and technologies capable of harmoniously integrating citizens’ well-being with new living needs and available resources. We aim to develop an industrial model integrated into the local area, where people can live well, in health and safety, with respect for the environment, its resources and future generations.

ISO 14001 Certification

M.M. has decided to implement an Environmental Management System according to the international ISO 14001:2015 certification, the reference standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS – Environmental Management System), as part of a transparent approach to the market.

ISO 14001 is a voluntary standard based on the “Plan-Do-Check-Act” methodology, with a systematic approach to planning and implementing an Environmental Management System. An important operational tool for sustainable management, this certification confirms the adequacy of M.M.’s environmental management system for controlling environmental impacts, preventing pollution and reducing energy and resource consumption, and is part of a continuous improvement path for M.M. products and services.

MATERIAL

GRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers), has a significantly lower density than conventional materials such as steel and concrete: up to four times lower. This feature offers important environmental advantages: during transport, vehicles emit less CO2 when moving lighter materials, and installation does not require heavy machinery.
The combination of remarkable lightness and high resistance to deformation is GRP’s key strength, enabling a wide range of applications.

PROCESSES

M.M. meets its energy needs through solar panels and develops highly efficient production processes that make M.M.’s FRP products a sustainable alternative to traditional materials.
From an energy perspective, the production of FRP products consumes up to 80% less electricity than the production of aluminium gratings and profiles, with a consequent reduction in contribution to global warming.
The complete closure of the mould during the production process effectively limits the evaporation of volatile compounds and, at the same time, ensures better and complete polymerisation by retaining, during the exothermic peak phase, much of the heat released by the reaction within the matrix. This minimises energy consumption per unit produced.

Furthermore, FRP production makes it possible to save significant amounts of greenhouse gases. As confirmed by international studies, less CO2 is emitted when producing FRP products from virgin material than when producing steel or aluminium products from recycled material.

FRP production is cleaner than that of other materials because, in addition to reduced air emissions, it does not cause further water pollution. M.M.’s finished product can also be used in fixed systems for the collection, treatment, conveyance and distribution of water intended for human consumption, as it does not release substances harmful to people or the environment.

SUSTAINABILITY: RECYCLING AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY POTENTIAL

In accordance with European Union guidelines for end-of-life treatment of products, M.M. is developing a strategy for the prevention, repair and reuse of composite products. From a circular economy perspective, with the aim of minimising landfill waste disposal, M.M. intends to develop, together with other sector stakeholders, a closed-loop system based on the following key principles:

REDUCTION: TO DECREASE WASTE IN THE PRODUCTION CYCLE

RECYCLING: TO PRIORITISE THE USE OF MATERIALS THAT ARE TECHNICALLY SUITABLE FOR RECYCLING

REUSE: TO PROMOTE THE VALORISATION OF WASTE AND THE REPAIR OF PRODUCTS

RECOVERY: TO COLLABORATE ON ENERGY RECOVERY PROJECTS OF FRP

Unlike traditional materials, FRP products have a longer life cycle thanks to their high resistance to aggressive chemical and atmospheric agents (corrosion); moreover, they do not soften when heated, have high dimensional stability and a high mechanical strength-to-weight ratio. These characteristics make them an exceptional product that requires limited or even no maintenance over time. This leads to significant and proven savings, providing a clear return from a long-term perspective. Last but not least, it is possible to recycle pulverised FRP processing waste to obtain new raw material, from which recyclable products can in turn be made. Similarly, with a view to continuous improvement, the introduction of innovative industrial plants will make it possible to recycle our products at the end of their life cycle, which is why we are already establishing strong collaborations with companies in the recycling sector.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN: EPD FOR PULTRUDED PROFILES AND EPD FOR GRATINGS

M.M. has obtained the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for 40 geometries of pultruded structural profiles, both open and closed section, and for 52 configurations of FRP/GRP gratings. This is not simply an environmental declaration, but a recognised technical tool based on verifiable and structured data, prepared according to the international standards EN 15804 and ISO 14025, in support of sustainable design.
The EPD is based on a complete analysis of the product life cycle (LCA – Life Cycle Assessment), from raw material procurement through to end-of-life management. The EPD provides objective and verified environmental data on more than 30 indicators, including greenhouse gas emissions, energy and water consumption, waste generation and use of natural resources.
These data not only demonstrate the transparency of the production process, but also serve as useful tools for optimising design choices.
