FRP solutions for energy infrastructure and plants

M.M.’s FRP gratings and structures, along with their accessories, are particularly well suited for use in the electrical field (power plants, transformer stations, transmission lines, distribution lines, transformer substations, conversion stations, switching stations, regulation stations), since the presence of electricity makes the use of electrically insulating materials essential.

In these contexts, the following can indeed be built:

  • covers for cable ducts and manholes, using FRP grating with a covered surface and pultruded profile angles/frames, with a load capacity suitable for light vehicle or pedestrian traffic;
  • fences and protective panels, including modular, pre-assembled versions that are easy to install;
  • parapets, stairways and vertical ladders to ensure maximum safety for operators in the workplace.

FRP covers ensure high mechanical strength and are very easy to install thanks to their lightness. Access to technical rooms is made easy and safe, with no need for lifting equipment.
M.M.’s FRP fences, made with gratings/mesh and FRP posts, also ensure maximum safety from the risk of electrocution for operators.

Anti-slip, self-extinguishing, electrically insulating gratings

M.M.’s gratings have been designed and tested in accordance with the electrical standards EN 61340-2-3 and IEC 61340-4-5, and are classified as excellent insulators in surface resistance and resistivity tests (Rs and Rt) and in earth safety resistance and resistivity tests.

For an additional level of protection, M.M.’s gratings are supplied with fire reaction properties of class BFL in accordance with EN 13501, a FLAME SPREAD INDEX of 20 in accordance with ASTM E84-22, and anti-slip level R13 in accordance with DIN 51130.

FRP for renewable energy and hydrogen plants

M.M.’s gratings and structures can play an important role, both within production plants and along distribution lines, in the development of renewable energy:

  • solar energy, particularly photovoltaic;
  • wind energy, particularly offshore;
  • hydroelectric energy;
  • geothermal energy;
  • biomass energy;
  • tidal energy.

M.M.’s structural work is also used to build modular service platforms in geothermal power plant drilling facilities. Vertical ladders, built in accordance with the UNI 11962 standard, provide safe access to rooftop photovoltaic systems on buildings for maintenance operations. In the same field, M.M. has also designed and built support structures for floating photovoltaic parks.

M.M. solutions can also make a concrete contribution to the hydrogen sector, particularly in water electrolysis production plants. Hydrogen is in fact one of the key energy carriers for achieving the decarbonization targets set by Italian and European strategies for 2030 and 2050.
