Wastewater treatment plants are characterised by conditions of high humidity, thermal shock, ice formation, growth of micro-organisms and invasive plants, and the presence of slimy or corrosive substances (hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, sulphur-containing organic compounds, reduced sulphur organic compounds, amines, indole and skatole, volatile fatty acids). These factors, which often alternate and overlap, make it hazardous for operators to move around within the work areas.

Treatment plants: where to use M.M. products
Fibreglass Reinforced Polymer (FRP) products are widely used in wastewater treatment and purification plants for their resistance to corrosion, durability, lightness and ease of installation. FRP is an innovative material that meets the safety requirements of treatment plants. FRP gratings and pultruded profiles are increasingly used to build:
- lightweight pedestrian and vehicle traffic-rated covers, often fitted with lifting handles to facilitate inspection activities, suitably designed and sized by M.M.’s technical department to support various plant components, such as pipework and equipment. Useful for counteracting bioaerosol formation;
- stairways and tank covers in first-flush stormwater treatment plants;
- access structures for digesters, lifting/pumping stations, tanks and technical areas in general (e.g. fixed ladders, often fitted with rest platforms, and inclined stairways – single-flight, multi-flight, tower-type or helical);
- parapets, essential due to the presence of tanks (settling tanks, flotation units, grit chambers, oil separators, clarifiers, activated sludge tanks, thickeners, sterilisation tanks);
- protective canopies for plant equipment and structures, made with pultruded profiles and corrugated FRP sheets;
- biofilters, filter bed support systems made up of grating decks supported on adjustable supports, for the treatment of gaseous emissions.
Wastewater treatment: why choose our products
The choice of the most suitable FRP product characteristics is made based on an analysis of the specific requirements of the treatment plant, such as the type of wastewater to be treated, the expected workload, and environmental conditions.
M.M.’s gratings are manufactured in accordance with the DIN 24537-3 standard. The anti-slip quartz finish, level R13 in accordance with the DIN 51130 standard, provides operators with an additional level of safety. For maximum resistance to hydrogen sulphide (H2S) emissions, standard line gratings can be supplied with an additional vinylester resin surface finish. Thanks to the material’s total dielectric properties, M.M.’s gratings, classified as excellent insulators under the electrical safety standards EN 61340-2.3 and IEC 61340-4-5, ensure adequate electrical safety.
