Client: TURIN AIRPORT
Location: TURIN - ITALY
Application sector: DELIMITATION OF THE DE-ICING AREA WITHIN THE AIRCRAFT MANOEUVRING AREA
Objectives
The customer requested the construction of jet blast deflectors to diffuse, and at the same time deflect, the jet blast produced by aircraft engines during manoeuvres. The existing metal barriers showed signs of wear due to oxidation and loss of colour, requiring periodic maintenance. As a result, jet blast deflectors made of alternative materials were needed to ensure durability and maintenance-free operation. The new solutions were required to meet the airport colour requirements, i.e. white and aviation red.
Solution
M.M. supplied FRP gratings in the required colours for the construction of jet blast deflectors ensuring safety, durability and maintenance-free operation. To create the reinforced concrete ballast on which the structural profiles were installed to support the FRP panels, M.M. supplied the installer with the technical layouts to correctly position the mechanical fastenings. The profiles were joined so that they facilitate handling on site and absorb any geometric tolerances associated with the reinforced concrete ballast. FRP panels were fastened on the profiles following an in-depth study to determine not only the percentage of the open and closed area based on the tilt angle, but also the angle of air flow deflection. All the fastenings were sized to withstand the action of the planes’ jet engines. Lastly, the jet blast deflectors were tested with the support of an airline which provided a plane to simulate the manoeuvres on the de-icing pad.
