The initial type test of a product is a set of technical and functional checks carried out on a representative sample of a product to verify that it complies with specific regulatory, technical or safety requirements, prior to the start of series production or placing on the market.

In practice, its purpose is to:

  • Verify that the product design complies with applicable technical standards
  • Ensure that the product meets the required safety, quality and performance criteria.
  • Provide the basis for the product’s certification, where applicable.

REACTION TO FIRE

Reaction to fire refers to the degree to which a combustible material participates in the fire to which it is exposed. It is a property of the material.

Standard EN 13501-1 defines the classification criteria based on the results of reaction-to-fire tests.

The classification report P 0958/16-530-3 issued by ZAG, based on the test results, assigns the open grating with IFR formulation the fire reaction class Bfl (where the subscript fl stands for flooring) and the smoke emission class s1.

The classification report 386900 issued by Istituto Giordano, based on the test results, assigns the grating with double surface laminate and IFR formulation the fire reaction class Bfl (where the subscript fl stands for flooring) and the smoke emission class s1.

EN 13501 fire classification tests are also carried out on different formulations and geometries.

For certain countries and fields of application, fire reaction classification may be required based on other standards (e.g. ASTM).

ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISTICS

MM.M. has tested the following electrical characteristics of STANDARD line gratings with IFR formulation:

  • Surface and transverse electrical resistivity and resistance Rs and Rt
  • Electrical resistivity and safety resistance to ground, human body model
  • Dielectric strength at rated voltage

Based on the results obtained (resistivity greater than 200 MΩ, current absorption of approximately 300 μA), the material can be defined as an excellent insulator compliant with safety standards.

M.M. has carried out the following tests on gratings of the CONDUCTIVE line:

Surface and volume electrical resistivity

Surface and transverse electrical resistivity with a 10 Volt DC test voltage. Based on the tests performed, the samples show very low surface and transverse electrical resistivity and are therefore classified as excellent conductors.

Safety electrical resistance to ground, human body model

Electrical safety with direct ground connection at 500 Volt DC.

It is recommended to use a ground connection with a resistance greater than 1 MΩ.

Electrical safety with ground connection through a resistance of 2 MΩ.

Based on the tests performed, the samples comply with the standards (it is recommended to use resistances in the range of 1 MΩ to 5 MΩ).

A walking test with treading was simulated, using dissipative antistatic safety footwear, on the grating samples under test, both with and without a ground connection. In both cases no electrostatic charge generation occurred. Both samples are therefore fully classified as non-generators of electrostatic charge from foot traffic.

ANTI-SLIP

DIN 51130 is a German standard concerning the slip resistance of flooring surfaces under working conditions involving the presence of lubricants, such as oils or greases. It is particularly relevant for industrial environments.

What does DIN 51130 measure?

It measures the critical angle of inclination beyond which a person (wearing standard footwear) begins to slip while walking on an inclined plane covered with the material being tested.

Slip resistance classes (R)

The standard classifies materials into classes from R9 to R13, where:

  • R9 = minimum slip resistance
  • R13 = maximum slip resistance

The meaning of the two parameters R and V is indicated in the tables below.

R Indicates the angle of inclination reached in the test.  over 6° up to 10°: R 9
over 10° up to 19°: R 10
over 19° up to 27°: R 11
over 27° up to 35°: R 12
over 35°: R 13
V Represents the drainage space determined by the surface relief.

The values resulting from tests carried out according to DIN 51130 on open and covered gratings with different surface finishes are reported below.

Also indicated is the assessment contained in the “expert opinion” issued by ZAG following the anti-slip tests carried out on the gratings using the pendulum method.

AGEING RESISTANCE

There is no possibility of correlating the duration of artificial ageing tests with the expected actual service life of a product exposed to real conditions.

Test results provide reasonable indications when comparing different samples or mechanical and/or physical characteristics; in these cases, the results are more directly interpretable.

GRATINGS

TEST ACCORDING TO ASTM G154-06

Exposure for 1500 hours to UV lamp irradiation of 0.71 W/m² at a wavelength of 313 nm, with cyclic temperature and humidity variation.

At the end of the test, the sample undergoes a visual inspection and a grey scale check to assess color deterioration.

PROVA SECONDO UNI ISO 9142/04

TEST ACCORDING TO UNI ISO 9142/04

Cycle D3

The test is carried out keeping the sample inside a forced-ventilation climatic chamber, under the following conditions:

– 15 hours at a temperature of 40±2°C with relative humidity of 90±3%

– the temperature is brought to -20±3°C over 60 minutes, and held for 2 hours

– the temperature is brought to 70±3°C and 50±5% RH over 60 minutes, and held for 4 hours

– the temperature is brought to 40±3°C over 60 minutes

Repeated for 21 cycles (504 hours in total), the sample undergoes a visual inspection and a grey scale check to assess color deterioration.

The UV ageing test was passed with a grade of five on the grey scale and with no defects observed. After the hot/cold cycles, the gratings show no residual defects.

The results of tests carried out by ZAG (Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute) – report no. P589/09-460-01 INITIAL TYPES TESTING OF GRP FOR MOULDED GRATINGS – on samples taken from old supply batches showed that no sample exhibited significant variation in mechanical characteristics (flexural strength and modulus of elasticity) between old and new samples.

PROFILES

For isophthalic resin profiles, the series of tests carried out on samples for CE marking of stairs is available.

These tests involve flexural strength and impact resistance testing before and after accelerated ageing through exposure to a Xenon lamp.

TEST ACCORDING TO UNI EN ISO 4892:2006 + A1:2009

Exposure of 500 hours

Irradiance at 340 nm: 0.50 W/m²

Average black panel temperature: 65 ± 3°C

Test cycle: 102 minutes of light and 18 minutes of water spray.

Charpy impact resistance test (UNI EN ISO 179:2010) and flexural strength test (UNI EN ISO 14125-98) before and after the artificial ageing cycle.

To be acceptable (according to EN 14396:2004), the variation must be less than 20%.

Test results show a 7.9% increase in impact resistance and a 12.4% decrease in modulus of elasticity.
